4/24/11 Big Daddy Fishing Report!!

Place- Lake Almanor.

Lake Almanor continues her swing into full spring mode. The shallow bite for the lake's Browns has continued to be solid for fish into the 5 pound range. My best producing baits continue to be the Trophy Sticks covered in Trophy Trout Gel from Pro-Cure. The Small Mouth Bass have begun to hit the shallows in good numbers witch can be a bit of a problem when your target is the Browns, they do put up a great fight especially the larger females in the 4 to 5 pound range. There have been a few days when the Small Mouth action is so good I have had to move out to the open water and get back on the Downriggers to get away from them. We have been picking up a solid 50/50 mix of Browns and Bows with a few of the King Salmon showing near the dam from 10 to 16 feet. Look for the action to continue to improve as the warmer weather puts the metabolism of these fish into high gear.

4/12/11 Big Daddy Fishing Report!!

Place- Lake Almanor.

The Brown Bite Continues!! More Browns are beginning to move in to areas along the east shore following the Pond Smelt. On recent trips we have seen pretty solid numbers of Browns, some days having to cover more water than on others, but the fish are there. Many of the fish I have cleaned are loaded with good sized smelt. Several things are starting to line up that should pick this bite up even more. Hamilton Branch is now kicking out much less of the muddy water as in weeks past, and the clarity in many of the areas that were affected is starting to improve. The water temps are now starting in the low to mid 40's depending on location and getting as high as 50 if the conditions are right. Conditions are prime to support a great spring bite. This week my best producers have been the Trophy Sticks, of course covered in Pro-Cure's Trophy Trout Gel. These rigs hit fish in the 2 to 5 pound range. The parking issues at Canyon Dam have been solved by the county doing a great job of opening the second parking lot.

4/3/11 Big Daddy Fishing Report!!

Place- Lake Almanor.

It is Game On!! at Lake Almanor. How fast things can change with a break in the storms and a little sun. A week ago the fish were in a solid winter pattern and now the weather has them acting like spring. The open water bite near the dam and up the east shore that had been very good has dwindled over the week with only a few fish still being caught on smelt pattern imitations fished in the top 10 feet. When the water starts to warm I get excited to get in the shallows and chase Browns and that what we have been doing. There have been some rumors out there that the east shore is un-fishable due to murky water pumping out of the Hamilton Branch Power House, while the water is flowing out very stained most of the east shore is still very fishable. How do I know?? Because we have been hooking fish!! I have spent my time working rocky points along the east shore with Trophy Sticks finding mostly Brows with a few Bows in the mix. The fish have been running 2 to 5.5 pounds so far but each year we hook into the lake's larger fish doing this. It is only a matter of time. I have been lubing up the lures with Pro-Cure's Trophy Trout Gel. The water temps have been starting out in the high 30's and topping out in the mid 40's under mostly sunny skies and flat water conditions. Look for this bite to only get better as we move further into spring. The Canyon Dam Boat Ramp is in good shape with only one side currently open but it will not be long till the other side melts open as well. Parking can still be a bit of an issue as the side parking lot is still packed with snow and un-useable. Please use common sense when parking, be sure not to block anyone in or block access in or out of the parking lot.

Thank you Jake. Caught the big one on Trophy Stick as well as half of our fish after losing our sticks to structure, once I LOST all my trophy sticks!!! Was there for five days, and caught close to thirty fish. Smallest was around five pounds, and the largest was eighteen. Ended up coming home with close to forty pounds of fish, and released probably about one hundred pounds of Macks back into the lake. Will Definitely think about doing that trip again next year. Cabin and Lake was a Blast. Jake Need More Sticks!!! WILL WORK FOR STICKS!!! Stafford Family

I Trolled off cave rock again with Fish sniffer flotila in lite snow and wind at first ...... Got three hookups - 1. 6 pound mack released 2. 18.2 pound Monster Mackinaw 37 inchs long and a solid fighter for me , Hit right as the wind increased as Macdaddy Pounded By (the PT-109 and I ) and the rest of the flotilla headed in ( I was going to put and Run in to but that is when the Reel went crazy and started screaming..... I fought the Big Mack for a while and finally got him with the Monster 12 foot Net , thru the increasing Winds and Westerly White Caps of 3 to 5 foot swells . I went in reverse to keep strain off of line and the trophy stick !! I called Steve on the radio .... but he was already in along with everyone else and so I took a picture of it on the deck ,Released the Thick , Dark colored and White lipped Toothy Mackinaw as it was not what I was looking for as it was only a youngster , no blood and he zipped home to the bottom !! 3. We tore up 24 Rainbows with the biggest fish going 5.3 pounds. It seemed like every time we dropped the 4.5 Silver Platter or Baby Bow we hooked up. Non stop action. 1.5-2.3 were the best speeds. Pautzke liquid krill scent was very effective for us.www.lastcastguide.com

Went out off cave rock with trophy sticks off downriggers in snow showers and worked 50 to 100 feet . Lost two trophy sticks . and had no hook ups for a while the double hook up at the end of the day !! A 11 pound 32 inch Big Mack and a 15 pound 35 inch Big Mackinaw !! They were a double hookup right at ramp gate closure/4:00pm . What was weird was that both had wrapped themselves Together and twisted the fishing lines from both lines around themselves and the other lines very Well !!!! I used the big new net to get them both at the same time !!!! They were like burritos..... and after removing the trophy sticks and all the line ,released both back to the Deep and they were only bleeding slightly. They were a pitiful site and almost looked like a Giant Spider had wrapped them in Thread !! Cave rock ramp was clear when I left it , but now this morning it is snowing and 1 inch to 3 inches are now on ground at Lake level. No other hits. Aloha !!! GST www.blueribbonfishing.com

Trolled off downriggers alone off cave rock yesterday. Saw 3 other boats pulling in a couple rat macks. Hooked into a 31 inch 10 pound mack that nailed the gills with 6.5 baby Bow and bleed out... I had to keep it. Then the FUN started .....hooked into 2 MONSTER MACKS! The first was on for 20 minutes and SHREDDED the 10 pound and broke off just as I could see Him !! 15 to 20 pounds it felt like. Then an hour later the BIG MO HIT !! Had him on for 40 minutes ,VERY NICE FIGHT !! as I pulled him in to the boat over 60 feet of water... I got a perfect Look Down on Moby as He fought with great head shakes ( ON ROD Tip and Straight Down on the Bottom ,as I Watched His Head Shake Like a Gallon Paint Can Shaker !!!! And I got to see him shake his head and and Break me off under the Boat !! The line was even more shredded than the Last line !! What a Magnificent Animal as It turned and headed back Deeper along the Bottom !! A 7 pound 27 inch hit later and released him and he Zipped straight to the bottom !! Aloha !! Here are the running depths and speed recommendations for Trophy Sticks
At 120 feet back when running on the riggers,at 2.5-3mph the 4.5's & 5.5's run about 8 feet deeper than where the release clip touches the line & the 6.5's will run about 11 feet deeper than the weight with same set back. When down rigging for trout we like a 100-120 foot setback with the Trophy Sticks. While top lining or long lining at 200 feet back at 2.5-3mph the 4.5's run about 8 feet deep and the 5.4 inch Trophy Stick runs about 7.5 feet deep. The 6.5's run around 13 feet deep, you will lose depth the slower you go or by shortening your setback or by using lighter than 12 pound Seaguar Inviz X Fuorocarbon line. Run the 4.5 inch sticks at 1.3 - 3mph, the 5.5 inch trophy sticks between 1.9 - 4mph & the 6.5 inch sticks between 2.0 - 4mph. For Striped Bass the 6.5'sset at 100 feet back will run at that 9-10 foot desired range. Slower speeds and shorter set backs and they will run a foot or 2 shallower depending on direction and tide speed. For trophy size trout- A lot of big fish lately have come running the 4.5's on the downrigger with an intense wobble at slower speeds like 1.2-1.8 mph. You lure has to be within 5 feet of where the fish are (where you are marking them on the finder). Work your boat in good "S" patterns but stay on track. Fish where you are marking fish. Concentrate on these areas and when they are ready to bite they will. When top lining the sticks, don't rip them as much as they have their own "hunting action" when set at a minimum wobble, (see video section for video presentation) a few jerks here and there can be good. Too much ripping, like with other stick baits and the sticks won't work as good as a few jerks here and there and working the boat and making those lures work hard. Switch it up as with your speed but always pay attention to the speed you are running at all times. Catching a big fish will definitely make you forget all the important factors on why and how you just caught that fish. When top lining the 4.5 & 5.5 inch trophy sticks stay in 10 feet of water and weave in and out of the 8-12 foot deep range. When running the 6.5's and long lining stay in 10-15 feet of water and weave in and out of 10-20 feet deep of water. I hope this helps, oh yeah don't forget your Pro Cure Bait Scents either. We have found that the oddest flavors will sometimes produce numbers and quality fish so get a good variety to have with you and always keep a fresh bottle handy. The UV Flash works phenomenal as well. Smear this on the backbone of the sticks every 30 minutes or so. It is gel form ground up bait in a bottle that works wonders. A main forage of big fish all along our coast, rivers and lakes.
